Words written in smoke

Introduction — “Words in Smoke” Since the first man rolled a tobacco leaf around a small dream of silence, the cigar has occupied a unique place in human culture. It has accompanied kings on thrones, writers in front of blank paper, and the common man on an evening of thought. The cigar has become a symbol: of a moment to yourself, of freedom, of restrained pleasure, of quiet confidence, and of the company of people who gather together without having to say a word. The greatest writers, thinkers, and creators of all time have found in tobacco, and in the cigar in particular, a different language. A language that is not of words, but of breath. A language in which the fire speaks what is in the head, and the smoke reveals what the heart feels. In this chapter, I have collected the words that were truly spoken: sentences written while searching for a compromise between the material world and the spirit that seeks rest. Some praise the cigar as God’s gift to the weary, others criticize man’s desire for pleasure. All together they create a mosaic of thought, history, and breath. Because ultimately, a cigar is not just a product to smoke, it is an idea to roll, and a time to stop.
